Coverstory Nikki Phillips was discovered in the salon chair. “I was at my hairdresser salon in NZ, Saville’s, and Pauline Paget, editor of Woman’s Day, spotted me and said ‘I want her’. So Idid a little spread for Woman’sDay,then got put into a competition called The Face Of ’98 which launched me. It was originally going to be Nurse Nikki. “I always wanted to be anurse. Inever opened magazines and thought of modelling. It was something that landed in my lap and I’m so grateful it did because I’ve loved every second.” Nikki was on the panel for New Zealand’s Next To pModel. “That was so much fun. One of the best things I’ve done. Just seeing all these girls in my position was so nice. Isoenjoyed it.” Presenting and interviewing comes naturally. “The first person Iinterviewed was Renee Bargh. Isat thereholding amic and didn’tsay anything because Iwas so scared. Now she’sactually one of my best friends. She goes ‘I was so nervous to be interviewed with you’ and Iwas like ‘why?’, ‘because Iheardyou’rereally good’. That gave me confidence. Ilove it [interviewing], it really lets your personality shine. Ilove being really raw and just sitting down and making the questions up based on their personality.” Dealing with the Sydney paps has taught her to be achameleon. “It’ssoweirdfor me. Because my mum doesn’teven recognise me a lot of the time. My face is so changeable. Itie my hair back and half the paps arelike: ‘you look so different’. They spot me at To ko having lunch and I’m like ‘wow’. Ithink it’scool and flattering, but Idon’trecognise myself alot of the time.” Don’texpect her on the dance floor at three in the morning. “I have not been to aclub in so long and I’m 27 today and I’m already old! Ithink it’s just because Itravelled when Iwas so young and I was in Germany and in To kyo and Iwas drinking in bars and Iwas like ‘wow this is fun’, but now I’d so much rather have friends over for abarbecue.” Nikki became avegetarian after an experience in Bali. “I started being avegetarian a Nikki at the CLEO Carnivale Party BFFs: With close pal, Channel [V]’sRenee Bargh.
