Te am up two of the world’shottest stars, place them in the breathtaking backdrop of Europe and you have a recipe for amanipulative drama thriller that’sone of this summer’s most anticipated films. We caught up with the two leads to chat about their new film, The To urist. INTERVIEW MICHELE MANELIS Yo ur character Elise Clifton-Warddoesn’t like being questioned or being summoned. But she’s full of contradictions, isn’t she? (Laughs) Ithink on occasion we like being summoned, but it has to be done verywell. Ithink there’saway aman reads awoman, and can tell when she’d like to be pushed to do something or if it would give her great pleasure. It’saverydifferent to somebody putting their own desires on somebody who is unwilling. The costumes areamazing. How does that help you in your work, and areyou interested in fashion? Well, Ihave to get dressed up for days like today, but it’sactually not something Ilove to do. My suitcase is full of black pants and T- shirts and Ihave the same black clothes Iwear everyday, toapoint if I wear colour, mykids are shocked (laughs). But for characters, Iactually really do [like fashion], it helps me to get into acharacter.Ifelt like Iwas turning somebody who wasn’tquite alady into alady. And I had to learn how to walk right and sit right and slow down, and so it was agood experiment for me, it was good to figure out how to do it. Yo utalk about slowing down, it must have been hard to slow down for this character after Salt. It was veryhard, it’sjust not in my nature. Ithink with the modern woman, we have so much to do, we get up, we have this and that to do. If somebody said, no just walk across the street, look at the sky, enjoy the day, smell the air,we’d think, you are insane (laughs), Idon’thave time for that. These women of luxury, it’spart of their allure, and it was part of hers that she somehow had the ability to do that. But my first scene was walking across the street in Paris, and he made me go back five times, and he kept saying, slower.Slower.Slower.And Ithought, ohhh, ‘slower’ was my mantra. The director,Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others), said this character is like VIP 30
